Professional Summary:
Jeffrey Smith is a native of Colorado. He earned his Ph.D. in cultural-historical geography from Arizona State University in 1997 and joined the faculty at Kansas State University in 1998. He was awarded graduate faculty status the following year. Dr. Smith has published one book (Explorations in Place Attachment - Routledge - 2018), twenty-seven refereed journal articles (nine in flagship journals), ten book / encyclopedia chapters, nineteen book reviews, and a co-edited textbook (World Regions and Places - Pearson - 2016) for World Geography. His 2001 article in the North American Geographer ("Los Hermanos Penitentes") won the Editor's Choice Award. In 2006 he was selected as a Transnational Fellow by the Mexico-North Research Network based on his research on remittances and migration from rural Mexico. Dr. Smith currently serves as Book Review Editor for the Journal of Cultural Geography. In addition to securing twenty-two grants and fellowships, he has presented numerous papers at professional meetings and has been an invited speaker at a various colleges and universities. Dr. Smith has served as lead advisor for eight Masters students and three Ph.D. students as they earned their degrees. Over the course of his thirty years of teaching college- / university-level classes, he has earned many teaching awards including the 2004 Kansas State University Presidential Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the 2017 Iman / K-State Alumni Outstanding Award for Teaching. He was promoted to Full Professor in Fall 2019. His current research examines peoples' emotional attachment to place as well as restorative places.
